Preparation for the TEF Test in Quebec at ALC Montreal

Test of French Proficiency

The TEF is a language exam used to evaluate the communication and comprehension skills of people whose native language is not French. This test is is used for immigration in Quebec and is the only accepted by the Department for Federal Skilled Workers (FSW). Furthermore, the TEF has the two speaking tests (comprehension and communication) required to obtain Canadian Citizenship.

Regardless of the test version, and by basing scores on a continuous scale, it is a standard test with reliable scores able to measure one’s knowledge of French.

It applies to people from all levels – from beginner to advanced – and from all social and professional categories. No specialized knowledge or vocabulary is necessary, apart from the usual every-day vocabulary used in daily life.

The TEF fulfills the requirements set forth by the Ministry of Immigration, Diversity and Inclusion,  and meets the needs of people wishing to settle in Quebec for a longer period of time.

To obtain Canadian Citizenship, the TEF contains 2 mandatory sections

  • Oral Comprehension (60 questions). Duration: 40 minutes

  • Speaking skills. Duration: 25 minutes

The TEF consists of 3 mandatory and 2 optional sections:

  • Reading comprehension (50 questions). Duration: 60 minutes
  • Vocabulary & sentence structures (40 questions). Duration: 30 minutes
  • Oral comprehension (60 questions). Duration: 40 minutes

The 2 Optional Sections

(Important: Please ask the person in charge of your file as some candidates are required to take these sections).

  • Written skills. Duration: 60 minutes
  • Speaking skills. Duration: 25 minutes

ALC Montréal propose 2 options de préparation au TEF selon vos besoins et vos possibilités.

  • From 1 to 5 classes per week
  • 2 hours minimum per class
  • Schedule according to your availability between 8:30am and 9pm

Costs: $615 includes academic materials + (registration fees of $55.00 for local students)

A minimum of 3 students is required to start a session.

  • 36 hours of academic courses
  • 3 to 4 mock tests in addition to academic courses
  • Session length: 4 weeks
  • Educational support
  • Evening session: 6:10pm to 9:00pm Tuesday – Wednesday – Thursday
  • Daytime session: 3:10pm to 6:00pm Tuesday – Wednesday – Thursday
  • Training in the language lab – up to 6 hours/week depending on the student’s schedule
  • Session start date: 1st Tuesday of every month except for December and January

Note : ALC reserves the right to modify the course schedule depending on registrations.

ALC reserves the right to reduce the length of class times by 50% in cases where there are fewer than 3 participants so as to not cancel the session.

In this case, the course becomes a private or semi-private course with the same cost as a group course.

Attention: Your prior knowledge of French is important. You must take an evaluation test before we are able to confirm your registration for the TEF preparation course. It is important that you pass this test as you will be presenting it in your immigration file.

Cost of a mock test: between $40 and $80, depending on the number of tests required for the exam.

Your “TEF in Quebec” certification is valid only for your immigration file. For example, it cannot be used to enrol at a French university.
