English language exams
The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) iBT (Internet Based Testing) is the test required by all American and Canadian Universities, and by many other institutions enrolling non-anglophone students. This makes the TOEFL one of the most popular and renowned English language exams. It primarily aims to evaluate the student’s aptitudes in an academic context, but it is important to note that many companies also rely on this test to evaluate the linguistic aptitudes of its future employees.
The TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication), as opposed to the TOEFL, aims to evaluate linguistic aptitudes in the context of business. Many large international firms now require it. They are hiring more and more people with abilities in foreign languages so as to keep an edge over their competitors. Many government institutions also require the TOEIC certificate. Some universities may also ask for it depending on the program.
If American univeristies rely more heavily on the TOEFL for their entrance criterion, European universities prefer to ask for the International English Language Testing System, as it is mostly concentrated on “international” English (i.e. a blend of British, American, Australian, etc.). The IETLS is also the test required from those wishing to immigrate to an Anglophone country, most notably Canada.
The TOEFL (Test Of English as a Foreign Language) Junior is designed for teens, from ages 11 to 15, wanting to obtain an internationally acclaimed English language certificate. It is also a good way to prepare for the TOEFL.
French Language Exams
The TFI (Test International de Français) is for non-francophones wishing to obtain a French language certificate. As with the TOEIC for the English language, the TFI is concentrated primarily on everyday French as well as that of the business world. It is required often required by universities or other insitutions
The TCF (Test de Connaissance du Français) is a broad and general French language exam. As opposed to the TFI, which evaluates linguistic aptitudes in day-to-day and business world French, the TCF aims to give a broader overview of linguistic ability. Seen as it evaluates all areas of linguistic ability, it is often required by universities and institutions.
The TEFaQ is a version of the TEF (Test d'Évaluation de Français) adapted for Quebec. This is the test required by the Ministry of Immigration and Cultural Communities of Quebec for all immigrants to Quebec. It focuses principallly on comprehension and oral expression and is primarily oriented to working people.
Spanish Language Exam
The DELE (Diplôme d’Espagnol en Langue Étrangère) is recognised worldwide. It will permit you to work or study in any Spanish-speaking country. This test, delivered by the Cervantès Institute, is the only language test for non-Hispanics which is certified by the Spanish government.
